Gulf Coast on Alert as Warm Waters Fuel Rise in Flesh-Eating Bacteria Cases
Health warnings are out along the Gulf Coast as rising water temperatures and runoff fuel a spike in Vibrio vulnificus infections, which can cause severe, rapidly progressing wounds.
Health officials are urging caution along the Gulf Coast as a surge in cases of Vibrio vulnificus, a bacterium commonly known for its flesh-eating potential, has been reported. The spike has resulted in several fatalities, prompting experts to explain the risks and how the public can stay safe.
Dr. Jeffrey D. Cirillo, a Regents Professor at the Texas A&M University College of Medicine, notes that while Vibrio is a natural part of the Gulf Coast environment, this year is proving particularly severe. The primary driver, he explains, is the combination of unusually warm water temperatures and increased runoff from recent weather patterns.
"The only thing that's really kind of changed is the temperature," Cirillo says. As water temperatures rise, the bacteria proliferate more rapidly. Flooding and major weather events like hurricanes also wash more of the bacteria into the coastal waters, creating a perfect storm for an outbreak.
The bacteria thrive in brackish water—the unique zone where freshwater rivers meet the salty ocean. This means the risk is concentrated along the coast, in the mud and shellfish, rather than in the open ocean.
Infection typically occurs when the bacteria enter the body through a break in the skin. A simple cut or scrape can become a gateway, especially for fishermen, beachgoers, or anyone handling shellfish like oysters. The infection progresses alarmingly fast, with the bacteria replicating quickly and producing toxins that can destroy tissue and enter the bloodstream, leading to a life-threatening condition within a day or two.
An infected wound will often look worse than a typical cut—more painful, bloodier, and potentially developing a dark, bruise-like appearance or blood blisters. Cirillo stresses that immediate medical attention is crucial if these symptoms appear, especially if accompanied by a fever, which signals the infection may have spread systemically. In such cases, IV antibiotics are often necessary.
While the bacteria can also cause illness if raw or undercooked seafood is consumed, the primary and most dangerous route is through wounds. For most healthy individuals, the risk remains low. Cirillo advises that people without open wounds should not be overly concerned. However, for those with any cuts or scrapes, the best defense is simple: keep wounds covered, clean them well, and monitor them closely for any signs of infection. The elevated risk is expected to persist through the summer and into the winter months.
