Guntur civic body intensifies drain de-silting ahead of monsoon
GMC steps up drain cleaning across 3,130 km, targeting 100 plastic-choked spots to ensure monsoon water flow.
The Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) has intensified its drive to clear plastic waste, silt and debris from the city's drainage network, which spans more than 3,130 kilometres. The move follows concerns raised over plastic accumulation blocking water flow in the drains.
Officials said on Monday that nearly 100 locations have been identified where plastic waste has piled up heavily. Clearance work is currently underway in these stretches, with the remaining parts of the network also being covered as part of the ongoing exercise.
GMC Commissioner K. Mayur Ashok noted that despite a ban on single-use plastics, waste continues to find its way into the drains. He pointed out that water bottles, which are not covered by the ban, have been a major contributor to the blockages.
The Commissioner has urged residents to cooperate with the civic body in keeping the drainage system clear, emphasising that unobstructed drains are essential for the smooth passage of rainwater during the monsoon season.
