Gurugram hit-and-run: Bainsla, friend Lavnish remanded to two-day police custody

A Gurugram court has sent Kalyan Bainsla and his friend Lavnish to two days of police custody in connection with the hit-and-run case in which a woman biker was knocked down by a speeding car.

Bainsla was arrested from Dausa in Rajasthan on Tuesday, a day after footage of the incident went viral. The video showed him driving a Maruti Suzuki Ciaz that struck the woman, identified as Sia, from behind as she rode an Aprilia RS 457, sending her skidding along the road.

According to police, Lavnish made indecent remarks at the woman biker before Bainsla's car hit her.

Sia had posted the video of Sunday's incident on Instagram, describing what happened during her ride. In the clip, Bainsla is seen harassing her after she asked him to keep his car at a distance, moments before he knocked her down and drove away.

Based on CCTV findings, the Gurugram Police registered a charge of attempt to murder against the accused driver, an offence that carries a prison term of up to 10 years.

Bainsla's lawyer has disputed that account, claiming his client was provoked and harassed by the woman and other riders. The advocate said the riders were overspeeding and that the accident was their fault. Asked why Bainsla did not stop to help, the lawyer said he feared being lynched by a mob and fled to avoid harm to himself or his family. He also argued that the attempt to murder charge was invoked under media pressure and that no motive had been established.

Multiple videos of the incident, however, show Bainsla deliberately hitting the bike and fleeing. Sia has said there were four people in the car and that they appeared to be intoxicated. Footage shows her riding before the white sedan overtook and hit her, after which she fell and rolled several times, with sparks visible as metal parts of her vehicle scraped the road.
