Gurugram Hit-and-Run: Driver Detained in Rajasthan, Attempt to Murder Charge Filed

Gurugram Police have detained Kalyan Bainsla, the driver accused of knocking down a woman biker on Golf Course Road and speeding away, from Dausa in Rajasthan. The arrest came on Tuesday, two days after the crash.

Investigators, relying on CCTV footage of the incident, have invoked an attempt to murder charge against Bainsla. The offence carries a maximum prison term of 10 years.

The crash occurred on Sunday when a white sedan cut sharply to the right and struck the helmeted rider, identified as Sia, throwing her off her Aprilia RS 457 sports bike. Video of the collision shows the motorcycle sliding across the road and sending up a spray of sparks.

Speaking before the detention, Sia said she would not abandon the fight and intended to set an example. She described the episode as a clear case of hit-and-run and attempted murder, and said the accused appeared to believe he could strike a woman and drive off without consequence. Her father, Rohshan Chauhan, said the family would not rest until the accused was punished.

In a media interview conducted from an undisclosed location, Bainsla said he had not known whether the rider was a man or a woman and contended that only one side of the events had been presented. He also asked why footage involving a male friend of Sia had not surfaced, and said he felt sorry for the woman.

Sia rejected that expression of regret, pointing out that his conduct after the collision did not match it. She asked why he had not stopped if he truly felt sorry, noting that it was his responsibility to halt and check whether she had been hurt. She said the outcome could have been much worse, with broken bones or death at the scene, and that the videos showed the occupants fleeing without pausing even briefly to see whether the person they had hit was alive.
