Guwahati Airport Gets Extended Precision Lighting for Safer Landings

Guwahati airport has commissioned a new precision approach lighting system (PALS) designed to give pilots clearer visual guidance during landings, particularly in challenging weather. The upgrade extends the approach lighting coverage from the previous 180 metres to 570 metres, offering a significantly longer visual reference for arriving aircraft.

The region's seasonal weather, marked by heavy monsoon rains and frequent periods of reduced visibility, often disrupts flight schedules. The enhanced lighting infrastructure is expected to mitigate these disruptions by allowing pilots to identify the runway environment earlier during their approach and maintain correct alignment with the runway centre-line.

The installation involved detailed planning, calibration, and testing, all carried out in line with aviation safety and regulatory standards. The lighting system and its associated electrical components have been engineered to deliver consistent photometric performance, ensuring reliable guidance during approach operations.

This initiative is part of the airport's broader modernisation programme aimed at upgrading airside infrastructure, improving operational efficiency, and reinforcing safety standards. The move also strengthens the airport's role as a key aviation hub for the Northeast region.
