Guwahati Beheading Accused Dies After Jumping From Police Vehicle
Ramanuj Goswami, accused of beheading his wife in Guwahati, died after jumping from a moving police vehicle during a hospital trip for a medical examination.
A Guwahati man accused of beheading his wife and keeping her severed head in a refrigerator died in the early hours of Monday after jumping out of a moving police vehicle while being taken for a medical examination, police said.
According to Tabu Ram Pegu, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East), Guwahati, the incident occurred around 2 am when a police team was transporting Ramanuj Goswami to a hospital. En route, the vehicle developed a tyre puncture. Officers replaced the damaged tyre with a spare and resumed the journey. Pegu said Goswami made no attempt to escape while the tyre was being changed and remained under proper guard.
Minutes later, as the vehicle neared Narsing College, Goswami allegedly attacked the constable holding his handcuffs. He kicked the officer, leaving him unable to react immediately, and then opened the rear door of the Mahindra Bolero and jumped out of the moving SUV. He fell onto the road and sustained severe injuries.
Police rushed him to a hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. Pegu stated that Goswami was guarded throughout the journey and that the officer-in-charge was present along with adequate police force.
Goswami was arrested in connection with the death of his wife, Riya Talukdar, 25, whose body was found at her Guwahati apartment on September 6, only a few months after the couple's wedding. Her fingers had been partially chopped, the body had begun to decompose, and her head was recovered from the refrigerator. Goswami surrendered to police later that night.
Two days after the surrender, while being taken to a court in Guwahati, Goswami told reporters he had "no regrets and no apologies". He later claimed he suspected his wife of infidelity and allegedly threatened to kill a man he described as her "sugar daddy" if he were released from jail.
Riya's family has alleged that Goswami had a history of drug addiction, concealed medical issues and a prior arrest in a 2019 financial fraud case. Police have said these allegations are being investigated.
