Guwahati ICU Doctor Found Dead; Family Alleges Harassment by Woman
Family of Dr Prayash Singhal alleges harassment by a woman and her husband; FIR filed after his death at Nemcare Hospital.
The family of Dr Prayash Singhal, an ICU physician at a private hospital in Guwahati, has lodged a police complaint alleging that he was harassed and threatened by a woman he had been in a relationship with. The doctor was found dead inside the hospital's new building in the early hours of Wednesday.
According to the complaint filed by his father, Sanjeev Singhal, Dr Singhal met Nilanjana Bhowal in 2025 and they later entered into a consensual relationship. The family says that when the doctor learned she was married and had a child, he wanted to end the relationship. However, the woman allegedly continued to contact him through calls and WhatsApp messages, and even visited his workplace multiple times.
The complaint also states that the woman's husband visited the hospital on June 12 and August 18 and allegedly threatened Dr Singhal. His father told police that the repeated calls, messages, and threats had affected his son's mental well-being.
The family approached Bhangagarh Police Station on August 19, and an FIR has been registered against the woman and her husband. Police are investigating the allegations.
Dr Singhal had been associated with Nemcare Hospital's emergency and ICU services for several years. He was at the hospital on Tuesday night and was found unresponsive inside an ICU chamber in the new building. Hospital authorities alerted police, who visited the spot and spoke to staff. The body was sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.
While some reports have described the death as a suspected suicide, authorities have not yet officially confirmed the cause or manner of death. A purported audio recording of a conversation between the doctor and the woman has also surfaced on social media, but it has not been independently verified.
Investigators are now examining the family's allegations and the circumstances surrounding the death, including whether the alleged harassment had any connection to it.
