Guwahati Homestay Worker Arrested After Student Found Dead in Room
A homestay employee in Guwahati has been arrested in connection with the death of a 22-year-old Gauhati University student found unconscious in a room last week.
Guwahati Police have arrested an employee of the homestay where a 22-year-old student was found dead last week, taking him into formal custody after three days of questioning.
The man, identified as Minut Ali, was produced before a court following a medical examination. Police sources said he had arranged and consumed liquor with the woman and her male friend.
The victim was a sociology student at Gauhati University. She had checked into Rudra's Guest House in the Azara-Dharapur area along with her male friend. On Saturday, she was discovered unconscious inside one of the rooms and was later declared dead at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.
Investigators are still piecing together what happened inside the room and have been questioning those present at the homestay. The woman's male friend told police she had hanged herself, but officers said that claim has not been established.
Police have said an altercation took place between the two during the night, and that injury marks were found on the woman's body. A murder angle is also being examined.
West Guwahati DCP Bolin Deori said the couple had been allowed to stay despite allegedly not having sufficient documents, and that the required records at the establishment were not properly maintained.
