
Hamptons Shark Tagging Effort Maps a Nursery for Young Great Whites
Marine researchers off New York's Hamptons are tagging sharks to study a great white nursery and the effects of warming waters.
On a recent day off a Hamptons beach, marine researcher Greg Metzger hauled in a young sand tiger shark. Working quickly with a colleague, the team secured the animal alongside the boat, collected tissue samples, and fitted it with tracking devices. Metzger noted the shark's tough skin was resilient enough to break a surgical scalpel, a reminder of its ancient lineage.
The work is part of a broader effort to study the shark population off Long Island, an area recognized as one of the world's few confirmed nurseries for great white sharks. These coastal waters provide a safe haven for young sharks, which are born at roughly four feet long and must fend for themselves immediately. Researchers believe the shallow, food-rich environment offers protection from larger predators.
Different tags serve distinct purposes. Some emit acoustic signals that are picked up by coastal receivers, while others record depth and temperature before detaching months later. The data reveals that sharks tagged locally travel as far south as the Gulf of Mexico before returning the following year, according to Stony Brook University marine scientist Bradley Peterson.
Frank Quevedo, executive director of the South Fork Natural History Museum, which coordinates the research, said warming waters are drawing more tropical species like spinner, blacktip, and bull sharks to the area during summer. He emphasized that sharks have always been present off Long Island, but increased sightings are partly due to modern technology like drones and smartphones.
Researchers also point to the cultural legacy of "Jaws," which was set in the Hamptons and fueled a damaging recreational fishing boom for great whites decades ago. Since great whites do not mature until their twenties, many caught young never reproduced. Conservation efforts have since helped populations rebound, though they remain below historical levels.
Quevedo stressed the importance of protecting apex predators, calling them the "balance keepers" of the ocean. The research aims to counter the perception of sharks as mindless eating machines and highlight their ecological role.
