Prince Harry and Co-claimants Await Cost Ruling in Failed Mail Case

A High Court judge will rule on interim legal costs owed by Prince Harry and six others after their failed privacy case against Associated Newspapers.

Prince Harry and six other prominent figures, including Sir Elton John, will learn on Friday the scale of their immediate financial liability following the collapse of their privacy lawsuit against the publisher of the Daily Mail. The High Court in London is set to determine the initial payment they must make toward the estimated £34 million in legal costs incurred by Associated Newspapers Ltd.

The claimants, who also include anti-racism campaigner Doreen Lawrence, filmmaker David Furnish, actors Sadie Frost and Liz Hurley, and politician Simon Hughes, are believed to have insurance covering roughly half of the total costs. The publisher has requested an interim payment exceeding £9.9 million, while the claimants' legal team argues the figure should be just over £7.9 million.

The ruling follows an 11-week trial that concluded on July 7, when Justice Matthew Nicklin found a lack of evidence to support allegations of phone hacking and other unlawful information-gathering practices. The judge noted that the reporting in question could have originated from legitimate sources.

The decision comes just days after the announcement that Harry and his wife, Meghan, plan to return to the UK after relocating to California over six years ago. The couple, who stepped back from royal duties, will reside outside London.

This defeat marks the end of Harry's three-pronged legal campaign against tabloid publishers. He previously secured a victory against the Daily Mirror's publisher in 2023 over widespread phone hacking and accepted a settlement from The Sun's publisher last year. Harry has long maintained that his legal battles, which broke with royal tradition, contributed to the rift with his father, King Charles III, and his brother, Prince William. He has also blamed the press for the death of his mother, Princess Diana, and for the treatment of his wife, which he says led them to leave royal life.
