Harvey Weinstein Gets 15 Years in New York Retrial Over 2006 Assault
Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 15 years in New York for sexually assaulting Miriam Haley, after a 2025 retrial revived a charge from a 2020 conviction that was overturned.
Former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein was sentenced on Wednesday to 15 years in prison in New York for sexually assaulting Miriam Haley, a former production assistant, in a case that became one of the defining legal battles of the #MeToo era.
The sentence stems from a 2025 retrial in which a Manhattan jury again found Weinstein guilty of a first-degree criminal sex act. The charge related to an alleged 2006 assault at his Manhattan apartment and carried a maximum penalty of 25 years. Weinstein has consistently denied sexually assaulting or raping anyone.
Original conviction overturned
Weinstein was first convicted in New York in 2020 of sexually assaulting Haley and raping aspiring actress Jessica Mann, and was sentenced to 23 years. New York's highest court threw out that conviction in 2024 and ordered a new trial, ruling that the original proceedings had been prejudiced by testimony about allegations that were not part of the charges.
Prosecutors retried him. In June 2025, a Manhattan jury convicted him of sexually abusing Haley but acquitted him on a separate charge involving former model Kaja Sokola. Jurors could not reach a verdict on the rape charge involving Mann.
That 2025 conviction over Haley's allegations formed the basis for Wednesday's 15-year sentence. Prosecutors had accused Weinstein of using his Hollywood position and influence to sexually abuse women, while his defence denied non-consensual conduct and argued the encounters were consensual.
Mistrial on rape charge
Weinstein's legal proceedings continued beyond the 2025 conviction. In May 2026, his third New York trial, concerning Mann's rape allegation, ended in a mistrial after jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict on whether he raped Mann in a Manhattan hotel room in 2013. It remained unclear whether prosecutors would pursue another trial on that charge.
Separately, Weinstein is serving a 16-year prison sentence in California after a 2022 rape conviction there. He has appealed that conviction and sentence. The California case means he remains behind bars regardless of the unresolved New York rape allegation.
The case has moved through multiple trials and appeals since Weinstein was first publicly accused of sexual misconduct in 2017. His downfall helped trigger a wider reckoning over sexual abuse and the use of power in Hollywood and other industries, encouraging women to report misconduct by powerful figures.
