Khap diktats on love, live-in draw Gen Z backlash in Haryana

Haryana's traditional khap panchayats, the informal caste-based village councils that wield considerable social influence, have issued fresh diktats targeting personal relationships. The edicts prohibit love marriages within the same village cluster or clan, as well as live-in arrangements and same-sex relationships. The councils have warned that those who defy these directives will be barred from entering their own villages.

The pronouncements have ignited a sharp backlash, particularly from the state's Gen Z population. On social media, young men and women are vocally rejecting the notion that community customs should override individual autonomy. Many argue that the personal choices of consenting adults are a matter of private decision-making, not public decree.

A significant strand of the counter-argument is legal: that the protection of women and all citizens is guaranteed by the Constitution and statutory law, not by the edicts of elderly male council members. This generational clash underscores a growing tension in rural Haryana between deeply entrenched social hierarchies and the rights-based expectations of a younger, more connected generation.
