Hawk Fire Forces Mass Evacuations as It Nears Reno
The Hawk Fire has grown to over 10,500 acres near Reno, forcing nearly 14,000 homes to evacuate. Nevada's governor declared a state of emergency.
A rapidly spreading wildfire, the Hawk Fire, has moved from the Sierra foothills toward the center of Reno, prompting evacuation orders for nearly 14,000 homes. By early Sunday, the fire had grown to more than 10,500 acres, with the "GO NOW" zone extending to the edge of the University of Nevada campus.
Washoe County emergency officials have opened the Reno-Sparks Convention Center as a shelter for evacuees, though pets are not allowed there. Separate facilities have been designated for small and large animals.
Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County and mobilized the Nevada National Guard. Two helicopter crews have been assigned to support aerial firefighting, and 60 troops will assist police in safeguarding evacuated neighborhoods.
The fire reportedly started on Saturday and grew rapidly due to strong gusty winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation, according to Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue. Approximately 400 personnel are currently battling the blaze, with resources from local, state, and federal agencies, including ground crews and air support.
