
Heel-first walking helped early humans cover ground, at a cost
A new study shows heel-first walking saved early humans significant energy for long-distance travel, but exposed them to high-impact forces.
The familiar rhythm of a human walk—heel striking the ground first, then rolling forward to the toes—is a trait far more distinctive than it seems. New research from Penn State, published in PNAS, reveals that this gait was a key evolutionary advantage, allowing early humans to travel longer distances in search of food. However, this efficiency came with a biological price: repeated high-impact shocks to the bones and joints.
Nicholas Holowka, an assistant professor of anthropology at Penn State and the study's lead author, explains that while humans land consistently on their heels, chimpanzees and other apes typically touch down on the front or side of the foot. This human-specific heel strike generates a noticeable spike of force with every step—a shockwave that can be felt running up the leg when walking barefoot on hard ground.
The payoff, the research suggests, is substantial. Humans walking with a heel-first style save an estimated 25 to 40 percent of the energy compared to walking on the balls of the feet. For early hominins, who needed to cover vast distances for hunting and gathering, this efficiency was likely crucial for survival and reproduction.
Holowka notes that the exact mechanism behind this energy saving remains unclear, but it may relate to the foot acting as a rolling surface, providing a smoother ride from back to front. The trade-off, however, was an increased load on the body's tissues. Over time, humans developed anatomical adaptations and, later, cultural innovations like shoes to manage these impacts.
Fossil evidence suggests these adaptations began appearing around 2 to 3 million years ago, marking a shift in human lifestyles. This change likely enabled ancestors to travel further, access more desirable food sources, and ultimately shaped the foraging patterns that define much of human history.
