Herzog Wishes Lynch Could Be First Audience for New Film

Veteran filmmaker Werner Herzog has paid an emotional tribute to his late contemporary David Lynch, speaking at the Venice Film Festival ahead of a premiere. Herzog revealed that during the editing of his latest work, he had casually told his editor that he would like Lynch to be present at the first public screening, which was scheduled for later that evening.

"Nothing deeper meaning," Herzog said, explaining that the remark was not laden with symbolism. Yet he acknowledged the profound mutual understanding the two directors shared, despite their distinctly different styles. "We had a deep understanding of each other's work, although we were quite different," he noted.

Herzog expressed a wistful desire to turn back time and have Lynch join him for the screening, but accepted that this was no longer possible. "I wish we could turn the wheel of time back and invite him tonight," he said, adding, "But it doesn't happen like this."

The tribute comes as the film world continues to mourn Lynch, who passed away earlier this year. Herzog's words underscore the quiet respect that existed between two of cinema's most singular voices.
