Himalayan Floods: Climate Change Amplifies Cascading Disasters

Recent Himalayan floods highlight cascading disasters, with experts urging global action on emissions and adaptation.

The devastating floods that struck Nepal and parts of China on August 26 have killed over 1,000 people, with thousands still missing, including many feared trapped in hydropower tunnels. The disaster was triggered by a massive collapse of bedrock and glacier ice, sending debris and water surging down multiple Himalayan rivers.

While scientists caution against directly linking this single event to climate change, they note that rising global temperatures are increasing the likelihood of such catastrophes, especially in the Himalayas, which are warming at roughly twice the global average.

Saswata Sanyal, a disaster risk resilience expert at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), described the event as a classic example of a cascading disaster. "One trigger—the rock ice avalanche—triggered the flash floods later on," he said, pointing to similar chains of events in recent years, including the Chamoli disaster and floods in Melamchi and Rasuwa.

The Hindu Kush Himalaya region holds the largest concentration of ice outside the polar regions, and glacier loss has accelerated sharply since 2000. Thawing permafrost is also weakening mountain slopes, increasing the risk of landslides and avalanches.

Sanyal noted that communities are struggling to adapt as disasters strike with increasing frequency. "People were still adapting to last year's floods, and before they could fully adapt, the next one came," he said.

Manjeet Dhakal, a UN climate negotiator, argued that the scale of destruction shows the adaptation threshold has been breached. "The whole town has been washed away—what adaptation can we talk about there? It's not just houses; basic infrastructure like drinking water, electricity, and schools are gone."

Dhakal called on the global community to treat this disaster as a wake-up call to urgently cut carbon emissions and support affected nations. Experts also stress the need for better land-use planning, stricter infrastructure assessments, and improved early warning systems. However, even alerts have limitations—of the 670,000 people who received text warnings, many were visitors or migrant workers who could not understand Nepali, while others underestimated the risk.
