Nagaon Win Would Signal BJP's 2031 Sweep, Says Himanta Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that a victory for the BJP in the Nagaon constituency would suggest the party is capable of winning all 126 assembly seats in the 2031 election. He was speaking at a press conference at the Cinamora Sammilan Kendra in Jorhat on Tuesday.

Sarma acknowledged that Nagaon has not been a traditional stronghold of the BJP. The constituency now covers Morigaon, Jagiroad, Raha and Nagaon, and while he said panchayat-level results from the last assembly election favoured the party in these areas, it had trailed by roughly 1.5 lakh votes each in Samaguri, Dhing, Rupohihat and Lahorighat.

According to the Chief Minister, the political atmosphere in the constituency has changed over the past month, since campaigning began. He said public support for the BJP has grown even in places where the party has no MLAs, with many people joining its ranks. An environment is taking shape in favour of voting for the BJP, he added, and the situation is improving by the day.

Sarma noted that Ministers Keshab Mahanta and Pijush Hazarika, along with MLA Jitu Goswami, have been working for the party in Nagaon. He said he has not yet visited the constituency himself, but that the leaders on the ground believe the situation is favourable. He added that the results would make the picture clear.

On political controversies and personal attacks involving opposition leaders, Sarma said he was not interested in such debates. He said his focus was on the BJP, the Assam Gana Parishad and the United People's Party Liberal, and that the alliance would keep working on governance. He also said he did not wish to be drawn into arguments or social media-driven controversies, including the making of reels, and saw no difference between the three ruling allies on this count.
