Hispasat to lead key ground segment for EU's €15.6 billion IRIS2 network
Hispasat named prime contractor for ground systems and LEO services in the EU's €15.6 billion IRIS2 secure satellite network.
Spanish satellite operator Hispasat has been appointed as the prime contractor for critical ground infrastructure in the European Union's IRIS2 secure satellite network. The announcement, made by parent company Indra on Friday, covers antennas, control systems, and ground links, with a contract value exceeding €1.6 billion.
Hispasat, which is 89.68% owned by Indra, will also lead the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) segment of the network, focusing on direct-to-device and Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity. Up to €600 million has been committed for this portion of the work.
The award follows negotiations between the European Commission, the European Space Agency, and SpaceRISE — a consortium comprising Eutelsat, SES, and Hispasat. The IRIS2 constellation is scheduled to begin operations in 2030, with total investment projected at €15.6 billion, including €4 billion from SpaceRISE.
This contract adds to Indra's growing portfolio amid rising European defence spending. EU military outlays are expected to reach €454 billion in 2026, up from €418 billion last year, providing a favourable environment for the company's expansion.
