Hosur MLA urges Tamil Nadu government to shelve airport project

AIADMK legislator P. Balakrishna Reddy, representing the Hosur constituency, on Friday appealed to the Tamil Nadu government to abandon the proposed greenfield airport project in Hosur. Speaking during the Assembly session, Reddy argued that the state should not proceed with the project given the strong objections raised by local farmers.

Reddy pointed to the recent cancellation of the Parandur airport project near Chennai by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay as a precedent. He noted that even though substantial land acquisition had already been completed for Parandur, the government chose to scrap it — and the same logic should apply to Hosur.

The MLA's remarks came amid broader Assembly discussions. In a separate exchange, Sholavandhan MLA M.V. Karuppaiah made a passing reference to former DMK president M. Karunanidhi's absence from the Assembly during the 2011-16 period. Former DMK minister R. Sakkarapani responded that the late leader could not attend because the then-government failed to make arrangements to accommodate his wheelchair.

The airport proposal has been a contentious issue in the Hosur region, with farming communities expressing concerns over land acquisition and its impact on agriculture. The government has not yet issued an official response to Reddy's demand.
