House Democrats promise to 'end this national nightmare' in midterm pitch
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries told voters on the Capitol steps that Republicans have done nothing to make life more affordable, vowing accountability from day one.
Standing on the steps of the U.S. Capitol before lawmakers departed Washington to campaign, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries accused the Republican majority of two years of inaction and said his party would deliver where the GOP had not.
Jeffries said Republicans had failed to bring down grocery costs, make healthcare more affordable, end what he called a reckless war of choice in Iran, lower gas prices, halt mass deportations, or hold the Trump administration accountable for corruption. He described the current Congress as a "do nothing" majority that was about to come to an end.
Recalling campaign promises made two years ago, Jeffries said President Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans had pledged on day one to lower grocery prices, stop endless wars in the Middle East, cut energy prices by half and push gas below $2 a gallon. Instead, he argued, they had made life more expensive for Americans. Asked whether those promises were lies, indifference or incompetence, he said the answer was all of the above.
Jeffries said Democrats' message to voters was simple: "We hear you… And we are committed to making life better for you." He warned that anyone stealing from, shortchanging or taking advantage of the American people was "now on notice," adding that House Democrats would hold the crooks accountable beginning on day one.
He said Democrats would keep showing up, standing up and speaking up until they end what he called a national nightmare and restore prosperity, peace and the promise of America. Jeffries closed his remarks by greeting supporters gathered at the Capitol.
