Drunk-driving crackdown nets over 230 motorists across four Hyderabad commissionerates
More than 230 motorists were caught for drunk driving across Hyderabad, Cyberabad, Malkajgiri and Future City commissionerates during special drives held between September 12 and 19.
Special enforcement drives across four police commissionerates in and around Hyderabad resulted in more than 230 motorists being booked for drunk driving, with two-wheeler riders accounting for the bulk of the violations.
The Hyderabad Traffic Police recorded the highest number, catching 129 motorists during a two-day drive on September 18 and 19. Two-wheelers dominated the tally with 101 riders, followed by 18 drivers of four-wheelers and other vehicles, and 10 three-wheeler drivers. Three motorists registered Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) readings above 300, while 24 others exceeded 150. The largest group — 59 motorists — recorded BAC levels between 51 and 100.
In Cyberabad, the traffic police apprehended 80 motorists during a weekend drive, including 62 two-wheeler riders, 16 four-wheeler drivers and two three-wheeler drivers. Courts in the commissionerate disposed of 142 drunk-driving cases between September 14 and 19. Twelve offenders were sentenced to imprisonment along with a fine, while 130 were fined.
The Malkajgiri Commissionerate Traffic Police caught 11 motorists between September 13 and 19 — eight two-wheeler riders, two four-wheeler drivers and one heavy-vehicle driver. All those apprehended were men. Ten recorded BAC levels between 36 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml, and one between 201 mg/100 ml and 300 mg/100 ml. Courts disposed of 111 drunk-driving cases in the commissionerate during the period, with two offenders receiving imprisonment and a fine, 19 receiving a fine along with social service, and 90 being fined.
Future City Traffic Police apprehended nine motorists during checks conducted between September 12 and 18. In a departure from the pattern in the other commissionerates, four-wheelers made up the majority, accounting for seven cases, while the remaining two involved two-wheelers.
Police in Cyberabad, Malkajgiri and Future City warned that an inebriated motorist causing a fatal accident could be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which carries a maximum punishment of 10 years' imprisonment along with a fine.
