Hyderabad's iconic Hotel Shadab loses FSSAI licence after food safety raid
TG SAFE suspended Hotel Shadab's FSSAI licence and shut two cafes after finding hygiene violations during a Hyderabad-wide inspection drive.
The Telangana Standards Authority for Food and Essential Drugs (TG SAFE) has suspended the FSSAI licence of Hotel Shadab's Madina Circle branch following a special inspection drive on Wednesday. The action came after authorities found multiple violations related to hygiene, sanitation, and the storage of meat and other food articles at the iconic eatery. The management has been directed to stop operations, though the restaurant was reportedly open for business later that evening.
As part of the drive, nine enforcement teams comprising Food Safety Officers and police personnel inspected 19 cafes and snack points across Hyderabad. The inspections uncovered a range of issues, including establishments operating without valid FSSAI licences or registrations, poor hygiene in food preparation areas, improper handling and storage of food, and the presence of expired and spoiled food items. Officials also reported infestations of houseflies and cockroaches, and found some food handlers without headgear.
Two outlets — Dreamz Cafeteria in Bagh Lingampally and Asiatic Cafe in Panjagutta — were ordered shut for operating without valid FSSAI licences or registrations. Perishable food items exposed to dust and flies were discarded, while tea powder, ginger-garlic paste, biscuits, and other suspected adulterated articles were seized and sent for analysis. A total of 15 food samples were collected on suspicion of adulteration.
TG SAFE said improvement notices would be issued to 12 establishments, including Cafe Persia, Bahar Biryani Cafe, Cafe Deccan, Honeymoon Cafe, Rio Restaurant, Friends and Cafe, Diamond Point Hotel, Hotel Imroz, Blue Sea Tea and Snacks, Nimrah Cafe and Bakery, and Gulzar Foods. These outlets will be re-inspected to verify compliance with food safety norms.
Additionally, show-cause notices will be issued to Golden Cafe, Dreams Cafeteria, Mirosa Cafe and Kitchen, Asiatic Cafe, and Hotel Shadab, with further action proposed for imposing penalties.
