Kashmir's First Government-Led Film Festival Opens, Actor Sees Big Opportunity

Veteran actor Shafi Qureshi has thrown his weight behind the inaugural International Film Festival of Jammu and Kashmir (IFFJK) 2026, calling it a significant step for the region's cinematic aspirations. The four-day event, organized by the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), begins on September 7 in Srinagar.

Qureshi noted that while private film festivals have been a part of Kashmir's cultural landscape for years, this marks the first time the government has taken the lead. He stressed the importance of curating quality cinema for the event, hoping that experienced directors and producers would participate.

"Good people should come here. People who are familiar with films," Qureshi said, adding that showcasing quality work would help local filmmakers learn and grow. He expressed optimism about the festival's success, while emphasizing that the selection of films would be crucial.

Beyond the festival itself, Qureshi highlighted the need for sustained film production in the region. He pointed to the abundant local talent, noting that many artists lack exposure and find it difficult to travel to Mumbai for opportunities.

"If good production houses come here, if there are shootings here, if they start getting work here, they will get exposure here," he said, adding that regular shoots would also benefit taxi drivers, hotels, and other local businesses.

IFFJK 2026 is designed to promote Jammu and Kashmir's culture through cinema. The festival will feature sections including an International Competition, Jammu and Kashmir Select, Cinema of the World, Bharat Panorama, Horror Film, and Documentary/Hybrid categories. Awards will be presented for Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor (Male and Female), technical achievements, Best Debut Film, and Best Film in the Jammu and Kashmir Select section.
