IG Metall Warns VW Board of Conflict Over Restructuring Plans
German union IG Metall warns Volkswagen that restructuring plans risking plants will trigger a conflict it says it does not want.
Germany's powerful industrial union IG Metall has accused Volkswagen's management of deliberately seeking confrontation over its restructuring plans, warning that the board will face a fight if it pushes ahead with changes that threaten factories and industrial infrastructure.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Thorsten Groeger, a senior union official, said the company's recent moves increasingly appear to be a calculated provocation. "What is currently emerging from the company increasingly gives the impression of a deliberate confrontation," he said.
Groeger made clear the union is not looking for a clash but will not back down. "If the management board is looking for this conflict, it will get it," he warned, adding: "We explicitly do not want it."
The remarks signal rising tension between Volkswagen and labour representatives as the automaker weighs deep structural reforms. The union has previously resisted any proposals that would put German plants or jobs at risk, and Groeger's comments suggest that resistance will remain firm.
