IIT Bombay and Imperial College London Forge New Alliance
IIT Bombay and Imperial College London have announced a strategic partnership in research, education, and innovation, focusing initially on clean and medical technology.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and Imperial College London have announced a strategic partnership covering research, education, and innovation. The collaboration will initially focus on projects in clean technology and medical technology.
The agreement is expected to create opportunities for students and researchers from both universities to engage in joint projects, academic workshops, and student entrepreneurship programmes. These initiatives will include placements and exchanges in both London and Mumbai, allowing participants to work collaboratively and share data.
This partnership highlights the growing scientific cooperation between India and the UK. IIT Bombay's Director, Professor Shireesh B Kedare, and Imperial's Director of the School of Convergence Science, Professor Anthony Bull, attended the event in Mumbai to mark the agreement.
Research teams from the two institutions are already working on several initiatives, including water management, energy security, disease models, and climate science. One project, led by Dr Angela Kedgley of Imperial and Dr Darshan S. Shah of IIT Bombay, is focused on improving the accuracy of upper limb motion tracking for potential use in diagnostics, physiotherapy, and rehabilitation.
Professor Kedare said the partnership marks an important step in strengthening the longstanding ties between the two institutions. He noted that combining their strengths in research, innovation, and education aims to address pressing challenges, particularly in clean and medical technology, and to create meaningful opportunities for students and researchers to translate knowledge into solutions with global impact.
As part of the collaboration, 170 students from IIT Bombay have enrolled in Imperial's Global Challenge Lab, a platform where students build startup ideas from scratch with guidance from industry experts.
