Youth Congress Demands Arrests, Independent Probe in IIT Bombay Student Death

The Indian Youth Congress has demanded the arrest of the director of IIT Bombay and a professor in connection with the death of a student at the institute, while also pressing for an independent inquiry into the incident.

Indian Youth Congress national president Uday Bhanu Chib said the death could not be reduced to a question of whether the student had resorted to unfair means. Even if it were accepted, for the sake of argument, that cheating had occurred in one per cent of the matter, the issue was not merely one of cheating, he said, because a person had lost his life.

The party's intervention places the focus on accountability at the top levels of the institute as well as on the circumstances that preceded the student's death. Its demand for an independent probe signals that it does not regard an internal institutional inquiry as sufficient.
