Ministry of Education Opens Applications for IIT Delhi Director Post

The Ministry of Education has invited applications for the position of Director at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi). The Department of Higher Education has issued a recruitment notification, setting October 31, 2026, as the last date for submissions.

The Director serves as the academic and administrative head of the institute. The appointment will be made on the recommendation of a Search-cum-Selection Committee and will require approval from the competent authority. The committee will evaluate both applications submitted in response to the advertisement and nominations put forward by eminent individuals.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must hold a PhD and a first-class or equivalent qualification at the preceding degree level. While an engineering qualification is preferred, candidates from science, mathematics, or management backgrounds may be considered in exceptional cases.

A strong academic record is essential, along with at least 10 years of teaching experience as a Professor at a reputed engineering or technology institute or university. Experience in guiding PhD students and a minimum of five years of administrative experience are also required. Candidates should preferably be below 60 years of age on the closing date.

Salary and Tenure

The post offers a fixed monthly salary of Rs 2.25 lakh, along with allowances as applicable. The appointment is for a term of five years or until the individual reaches 70 years of age, whichever comes earlier.

Interested candidates must submit a detailed resume covering their teaching, research, industry-academia collaboration, and administrative experience. They are also required to provide a two-page justification explaining their suitability for the role and a two-page vision statement for IIT Delhi. Contact details of at least two distinguished persons familiar with the applicant's professional work must be included.

Candidates employed in government departments, autonomous organisations, or public sector undertakings must apply through the proper channel. Completed applications and supporting documents must reach the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, by October 31, 2026, via Registered Post or Speed Post.

The notification also covers Director vacancies at IIT Mandi and IIT Indore. Professor Rangan Banerjee is the current Director of IIT Delhi.
