IIT Delhi Director Warns of Action as Student Protests Intensify

IIT Delhi Director Rangan Banerjee has cautioned students against further escalation of protests, warning of disciplinary action following demonstrations that extended into residential areas late Thursday night. The warning comes amid ongoing protests over the death of MSc student Rishikesh Kumar.

In a communication to students, Banerjee stated that a group of protesters gathered outside faculty housing between 10:30 PM and 12:30 AM, using language he described as unsavoury and threatening. He emphasized that such actions compromise the safety and privacy of faculty members and their families.

Students, however, have rejected this characterization. They maintain that the march through hostels and residential areas was intended to seek solidarity from the campus community. One student noted that slogans called for professors to come out and support them, adding that video evidence exists to support their account.

The protests, now in their fifth day, were triggered by Kumar's death, which police are investigating as an abetment of suicide. Students are demanding an independent inquiry, the resignation of specific administrators, and compensation of at least Rs 1 crore for the family.

Meanwhile, the institute says it has initiated several measures, including an external inquiry committee, a benevolent fund for the family, and plans to appoint an external ombudsperson. Students have questioned the efficacy of such committees, citing a breakdown of trust and concerns about mental health infrastructure on campus.
