IIT-JEE Topper Nitin Gupta Now Studies Mosquito Brains At IIT Kanpur

Nitin Gupta, who topped the IIT-JEE in 2000 with All India Rank 1, has followed a path that diverges sharply from the usual trajectory of IIT graduates. He is now a professor at IIT Kanpur, where his laboratory studies the brain and how it converts information into behaviour — with the mosquito among the subjects of his research.

Gupta completed his BTech in Computer Science at IIT Kanpur in 2004. His interest in biology drew him to the United States, where he earned a PhD in Bioinformatics and Systems Biology from the University of California, San Diego, in 2009.

He subsequently worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the National Institutes of Health, examining the electrical activity of neurons. Over this period, his focus shifted steadily from computers and bioinformatics towards neuroscience.

In 2014, Gupta returned to India and joined the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering at IIT Kanpur as a faculty member.

His research examines how the nervous system receives information and decides how to respond. A key area of study is how insects, including mosquitoes, process smells and use that information to shape their actions. Mosquitoes are well suited to this work because they depend heavily on smell to locate hosts, making their olfactory system a useful model for understanding how neural signals translate into specific behaviours.

Gupta's work has brought him several honours, among them the Innovative Young Biotechnologist Award, the Swarnajayanti Fellowship and the CNR Rao Faculty Award.

His transition from the country's top JEE ranker to a researcher probing the mosquito brain illustrates how an IIT education can lead to careers well outside conventional technology roles.
