IIT Kanpur Professor Shantanu Bhattacharya Elected NASI Fellow
Prof Shantanu Bhattacharya of IIT Kanpur has been elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India, effective January 1, 2027.
Professor Shantanu Bhattacharya of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has been elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI). The fellowship will take effect from January 1, 2027, and has been conferred in recognition of his outstanding scientific contributions.
Bhattacharya's research centres on the design and development of functional materials and the fabrication processes used to produce them across multiple length scales. His work finds application in a wide range of areas, including Bio-MEMS, Lab-on-Chip systems, nanotechnology, microfluidic system design and fabrication, sensors, acoustic metamaterials, water remediation and energy storage devices.
Beyond his academic role at IIT Kanpur, Bhattacharya serves as Director of the CSIR-Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIR-CSIO) in Chandigarh. He also holds additional charge as Director of the CSIR-Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-CEERI) in Pilani.
IIT Kanpur congratulated Bhattacharya on social media, noting that his innovative research relates to the design and development of functional materials and their fabrication processes at different length scales.
Founded in 1930, the National Academy of Sciences, India, works to cultivate and promote science and technology in all its branches and provides a national forum for the exchange of views and the publication of research carried out by Indian scientists. The academy receives financial support from the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, and is recognised as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation by the Department for Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Government of India.
