IIT Kharagpur Trains School Teachers in NEP 2020, Digital Pedagogy and GenAI

IIT Kharagpur's Centre for Interdisciplinary and Convergent Technologies (CIDCT) recently concluded a five-day capacity-building programme for school teachers, titled "Transforming Teaching Practices in School Education: NEP 2020, Digital Pedagogy, and GenAI."

The initiative targeted PGT Chemistry and TGT (Work Experience) teachers, aiming to translate National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 priorities into practical, classroom-ready methods. The curriculum combined contemporary pedagogy with hands-on, technology-enabled learning.

Sessions covered outcome-based education, assessment strategies, and laboratory learning, alongside newer tools such as Generative AI, computational thinking, IoT, microcontrollers, 3D printing, Raspberry Pi, and project-based learning. The institute said the programme was designed to support NEP's emphasis on multidisciplinary and skill-oriented teaching at secondary and senior-secondary levels.

In a special session, IIT Kharagpur Director Prof Suman Chakraborty spoke on best classroom practices and the institute's vision of IITs acting as "mentors of mentors" for schools, colleges, and local ecosystems. He has previously stressed that IITs should strengthen NITs, IIITs, universities, colleges, schools, MSMEs, hospitals, local governments, and entrepreneurial networks.

Participants also toured the institute's Virtual Reality Lab and the Nehru Museum of Science and Technology, linking pedagogical innovation with immersive and hands-on experiences that can be adapted for school settings.
