IIT Madras Launches PREM and SAFE to Support Student Mental Health

IIT Madras marked World Suicide Prevention Day with a parent session, a handbook on psychological safety, and a wellness app for counselling bookings.

Ahead of World Suicide Prevention Day, IIT Madras has rolled out a set of initiatives aimed at strengthening the support system around its students, with a particular focus on parents.

The centrepiece was an online interactive session titled PREM — Parents' Role in Encouraging and Mentoring — held on September 9 and conducted by Dr Yamini Kannapan, a senior consultant psychiatrist in behavioural science at Kauvery Hospital. The session offered parents practical guidance on understanding their children's needs, communicating effectively, and supporting their emotional and mental well-being during the academic journey.

The institute noted that the transition to college is a significant phase not only for students but also for their families, whose encouragement plays a vital role in overall well-being.

Alongside the session, IIT Madras released a handbook titled 'SAFE — Building Psychological Safety for High-Achieving Students', written by Dr Kannapan. Drawing on her experience of working with IIT Madras students, the book translates psychological principles into practical guidance for parents navigating the pressures faced by high-achieving young people.

A wellness app was also introduced to allow students to book confidential counselling sessions with wellness professionals. Students can choose their preferred counsellor and language through the Office of the Dean (Students) website.

IIT Madras Director V Kamakoti said, "Happiness is a collective responsibility. As an Institute we are continuously evolving methods to reduce stress among our bright children. The PREM and SAFE initiatives are launched for this purpose."

World Suicide Prevention Day is observed every year on September 10. It was established in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention in collaboration with the World Health Organization to break the stigma of silence around the issue.
