IMD flags heavy rain for coastal Andhra, Rayalaseema from September 19
IMD forecasts heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds at isolated places in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema from September 19 as a low-pressure system builds over the north Andaman Sea.
Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema are likely to witness heavy rain at isolated places from September 19, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) tracing the spell to a developing low-pressure system over the north Andaman Sea.
In its Wednesday bulletin, the IMD said an upper-air cyclonic circulation was positioned over north Thailand, extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level. This system is expected to drift over the north Andaman Sea around September 18, setting the stage for a low-pressure area to take shape over the same region by the evening of September 19.
The weather system is then projected to strengthen steadily and advance west-northwestwards in the direction of the south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh coasts.
Should that track hold, isolated pockets of Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema could receive heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds during the week.
Parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh already recorded light to moderate rainfall on Wednesday. Rowthulapudi in Kakinada district logged 68.6 mm, the highest among the reported locations, followed by Marripalem in Anakapalli district at 54 mm and D. Polavaram in Kakinada district at 48.5 mm.
Other notable readings included Konapapapeta in Kakinada district at 46.8 mm, Akkireddypalem in Visakhapatnam district at 45.5 mm, Anakapalli at 44.5 mm and Payakaraopeta in Visakhapatnam district at 43.7 mm.
