IMD flags very heavy rain for Uttarakhand, Himachal and western UP tomorrow
Extremely heavy rain is forecast for parts of Uttarakhand, with very heavy showers in Himachal Pradesh and western Uttar Pradesh on 27 September.
Northern India is bracing for another day of unsettled weather on 27 September, with the India Meteorological Department warning of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations in Uttarakhand.
Himachal Pradesh and western Uttar Pradesh are also expected to receive very heavy rain in pockets, while eastern Uttar Pradesh may see isolated heavy showers.
The trigger is a depression over southeastern Uttar Pradesh, which is forecast to track northwards and northwestwards before weakening by tomorrow morning. Even as it loses strength, heavy rain and strong winds are likely to persist over the region. Northern Madhya Pradesh could record heavy rainfall at isolated places.
State-wise outlook
In Uttarakhand, Dehradun, Tehri and Pauri are on alert for extremely heavy rainfall at isolated spots. The remaining districts may witness heavy to very heavy rain in isolated pockets, while most parts of the state can expect light to moderate rain or thundershowers. Thunderstorms could bring lightning and winds gusting up to 50 kmph, and snowfall is likely above 3,600 metres.
Himachal Pradesh's southeastern districts are expected to see the most intense activity. Sirmaur is under an orange alert for isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall, while Bilaspur, Mandi, Shimla and Solan have yellow alerts for isolated heavy rain. Moderate rain is possible in parts of Kinnaur, Kullu, Kangra, Chamba, Una and Hamirpur, with thunderstorms and gusty winds likely to complicate travel in several districts.
Western Uttar Pradesh faces very heavy rain at isolated places, and winds across northern Uttar Pradesh and adjoining Uttarakhand may gust to 45 kmph before easing gradually.
Delhi is likely to remain generally cloudy, with maximum temperatures between 30°C and 32°C and minimums between 21°C and 23°C. Afternoon winds may reach 22 kmph. The wider forecast flags isolated heavy rain across Haryana, Chandigarh and the Delhi region.
Scattered or isolated rain is also likely across Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, as well as parts of the northeastern states. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands can expect more widespread rainfall.
Flash-flood risk
Flash flooding remains a concern in parts of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh until tomorrow evening, while western Uttar Pradesh faces a low to moderate flash-flood risk. Heavy rain could trigger landslides, flood roads and disrupt road and rail travel.
The weather office has advised people to avoid flooded roads, swollen streams and slopes vulnerable to landslides. In Uttarakhand, pilgrims and tourists have been asked to travel only when necessary. During thunderstorms, shelter should be taken indoors rather than under trees, and farmers have been urged to protect harvested crops and arrange drainage for waterlogged fields.
