IMD: Southern Peninsula to See Subdued Showers, Central India Braces for Heavy Rain
The IMD forecasts subdued rainfall across southern peninsular India for the next week, even as a low-pressure system brings intense rain to central India.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued its latest forecast, indicating that rainfall activity will remain largely subdued across the southern peninsular region over the next week. From September 4 to 9, most areas are expected to receive only isolated to scattered showers, with a few exceptions.
Coastal Karnataka is projected to be the primary outlier, with fairly widespread to widespread rainfall anticipated during the forecast period. Lakshadweep is also expected to see more significant precipitation, particularly on September 8 and 9. Meanwhile, regions including coastal Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana will likely experience lighter, more sporadic rainfall.
This quieter spell in the south contrasts sharply with conditions in central India, where a well-marked low-pressure area over north-east Madhya Pradesh is set to trigger intense downpours. The system is expected to bring isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall to Madhya Pradesh on September 4 and 5.
The active monsoon will also influence weather across northern and eastern India. Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are slated for fairly widespread to widespread rainfall, with Jammu & Kashmir seeing widespread showers on September 4. Delhi, Haryana, and parts of Uttar Pradesh are likely to receive isolated to scattered rainfall during the week. Eastern states, including West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand, are also in line for significant wet weather.
The IMD noted that the recent 24-hour period has already brought very heavy rainfall (12-20 cm) to isolated spots in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, east Madhya Pradesh, and west Uttar Pradesh. Heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) was also recorded in parts of Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, and Assam.
Despite these intense localised events, the overall monsoon tally remains deficient. India's cumulative rainfall since June 1 stands at 624.5 mm, which is 13% below the normal average of 724.1 mm for the season through September 3.
