IMF Team to Visit Senegal for Talks on New Lending Program

IMF staff will visit Senegal from Aug 19 to Sept 1 to discuss a new lending arrangement, following progress on resolving a debt disclosure issue.

The International Monetary Fund has confirmed that its staff will travel to Senegal this week for a two-week mission, marking a significant step toward a new lending program for the West African nation.

The visit, scheduled from August 19 to September 1, will focus on continued discussions regarding economic policies and reforms that could be supported under a fresh financing arrangement. A source familiar with the talks indicated that the full-team visit reflects tangible progress and will involve more detailed technical engagement.

This mission follows an earlier statement from the IMF on August 3, in which the institution said its staff were ready to visit once Senegalese authorities signaled preparedness for the next phase of negotiations.

The discussions come after a debt misreporting issue came to light in 2024, which led to a freeze in the previous IMF program. Senegal's newly elected government at the time disclosed a substantially larger debt burden than had been previously reported, prompting a reassessment of the country's fiscal position.

In a related development, Senegal's minister-delegate for budget visited China last week, according to two sources. China is Senegal's largest bilateral creditor, and the trip is seen as part of ongoing efforts to address the debt situation.

The IMF and Senegalese authorities have been working to resolve the debt reporting discrepancy since it was revealed, and this upcoming visit is expected to build on those efforts toward a new program.
