India Clears Up to 600 MW Power Export to Nepal Through December 2026
India has approved export of up to 600 MW of power to Nepal for 18 hours a day from 13 September to 31 December 2026, with the quantum for January 2027 to be reviewed in December.
India has approved the export of electricity to Nepal for 18 hours a day, running from 13 September 2026 to 31 December 2026, in a move aimed at helping the neighbouring country cope with a supply shortfall.
The approval, granted by the Ministry of Power, allows up to 600 MW to be sent to the Nepal Electricity Authority through the Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar 400 kV double-circuit line. A further 54 MW can be exported via the Tanakpur-Mahendranagar 132 kV single-circuit line.
The supply window covers the period from 00:00 hours to 18:00 hours each day. The quantum of power to be exported from January 2027 onwards will be reviewed in December 2026.
The arrangement follows recent floods that caused significant damage to hydropower infrastructure in Nepal, cutting into its domestic generation capacity and creating an additional demand for electricity. The approval is expected to help Nepal meet its power requirements during this period.
India has said it remains committed to supporting Nepal and to strengthening bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, with the move seen as reinforcing the close and longstanding energy ties between the two countries.
