India clears 18-hour daily power export to Nepal after flood damage
India has approved electricity exports to Nepal for 18 hours a day through December 31, 2026, to help it cope with flood damage to its hydropower infrastructure.
India has approved the export of electricity to Nepal for 18 hours each day, a measure aimed at helping its neighbour cope with a shortfall caused by recent floods that damaged hydropower infrastructure and cut domestic generation capacity.
The Power Ministry said the approval covers supplies to the Nepal Electricity Authority from September 13, 2026 to December 31, 2026, with power flowing between 00:00 hours and 18:00 hours.
Up to 600 MW will be exported through the Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar 400 kV double-circuit line, while up to 54 MW will move through the Tanakpur-Mahendranagar 132 kV single-circuit line.
The ministry said the quantum of power to be exported from January 2027 will be reviewed in December 2026.
According to the release, the floods have caused significant damage to Nepal's hydropower infrastructure, reducing its domestic power generation capacity and creating an additional requirement for electricity.
The arrangement is expected to help Nepal meet its power requirements during this difficult period and to reinforce the close and longstanding energy cooperation between the two countries. India, the ministry added, remains committed to supporting Nepal and strengthening bilateral cooperation in the energy sector.
