India's Envoy Calls on Bangladesh President in First Such Meeting

Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi paid a courtesy call on Bangladesh President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at the Bangabhaban in Dhaka, marking the first meeting between the two officials.

During the discussions, President Alamgir stressed the need to resolve outstanding bilateral issues through dialogue to strengthen and sustain the relationship between the two neighbours. He expressed confidence that resolving matters of mutual interest through fair and acceptable solutions would enhance trust between the peoples of both nations.

The President also urged India to take effective steps to ensure a fair share of waters from common rivers, including the Ganges and the Teesta. In response, the High Commissioner said the Indian government was taking positive measures in this regard.

President Alamgir described Bangladesh's ties with India as specially important, given India's role as its closest neighbour and a key trade and development partner. He expressed interest in building a forward-looking partnership based on mutual respect, sovereign equality, and the welfare of the people.

The Indian High Commission noted that the discussion underscored the deep-rooted bonds between the two countries, built on shared history, cultural ties, and people-to-people relations. Trivedi conveyed warm greetings from India and sought the President's cooperation in discharging his responsibilities.
