India's BRICS Chairship a Success, Says Russian Envoy Ahead of Summit

Russian Ambassador Denis Alipov says India's year-long BRICS chairship has been a major success, citing ministerial meetings and new initiatives.

India's year-long chairmanship of BRICS has been a resounding success, Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov said, pointing to hundreds of ministerial-level meetings and advances across multiple areas of cooperation.

Alipov said the chairship had delivered progress in a range of fields and credited India with steering the bloc's agenda effectively over the past year. He added that the upcoming summit would serve as a further demonstration of how well India has managed its term at the helm.

Among the initiatives introduced under India's leadership, the envoy listed smart grids, energy storage, a startup innovation hub, an incubator network and a logistics supply chain framework.

The summit is expected to bring together leaders of the member states, with bilateral meetings planned on the sidelines. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and the President of Iran during the gathering, and is set to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping the following day.

Alipov's remarks underline the emphasis India has placed on institution-building and practical cooperation during its chairship, even as the grouping continues to expand its membership and global footprint.
