India pushes for deeper Brics trade and easier mobility for skilled workers

India has urged the 11-member Brics grouping to expand trade among its members, pressing for wider access for goods and services as well as easier movement of skilled professionals across borders.

The push comes as the bloc looks to build supply chains that can better withstand disruption and to lower the barriers that currently slow commerce between its economies.

New Delhi's position covers three broad areas: trade in goods, trade in services, and the mobility of skilled workers. Together, these form the core of its call for deeper economic engagement within Brics.

The grouping has been examining ways to make its members' supply chains more resilient, a priority that has gained prominence as global trade faces mounting pressures. Reducing obstacles to commerce sits at the centre of that effort.

India's emphasis on services and professional mobility reflects a long-standing interest in securing market access for its skilled workforce, alongside more conventional trade in merchandise. The proposal places both strands within the wider Brics discussion on economic cooperation.
