India-Canada Ties Have Moved Past Reset, Says Canadian High Commissioner

Canada's High Commissioner to India, Christopher Cooter, has said that bilateral relations between the two countries have moved well past the stage of a reset, describing the present period of rebuilding as one that serves both sides well.

Speaking on the state of the relationship, Cooter observed that in eighty years of diplomatic ties, there has rarely been an environment that has brought the two countries together in quite the same way as the current one.

He pointed to two developments that have helped ease the atmosphere. The first is the security dialogue concerning the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, which he said has made progress. The second is the decision to declare the Lawrence Bishnoi gang a terrorist organisation, a step he credited with improving the overall tenor of the relationship.

Taken together, the remarks suggest a relationship that is being deliberately rebuilt rather than merely restored, with official-level engagement continuing on sensitive security matters even as both sides work to stabilise ties.
