China's foreign ministry says Beijing and New Delhi are arranging a bilateral meeting between Xi Jinping and Narendra Modi during the BRICS summit in India.

The planned talks come as Xi prepares to travel to India this weekend to attend a BRICS summit.
Speaking at a regular press conference, ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Beijing is ready to view its relationship with New Delhi from a strategic and long-term perspective. She said the two sides should strengthen communication and cooperation while managing their differences properly.
Mao said Xi will take part in the BRICS summit, deliver an address at the event and hold in-depth exchanges with other leaders on the current international situation.
The ministry's remarks confirm the diplomatic groundwork being laid around the summit, which will bring together leaders of the BRICS grouping. A meeting between Xi and Modi on the sidelines would mark another high-level contact between the two neighbours, whose ties have been closely watched.
