India and China Hold First Corps Commander-Level Talks in Arunachal Pradesh

India and China have held their first Corps Commander-level meeting in Arunachal Pradesh, marking an expansion of the existing military dialogue mechanism between the two neighbours. The talks come just days before the BRICS Summit, which Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to attend.

The meeting took place against the backdrop of reported tension in the Taksing area of Arunachal Pradesh, a region along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). While details of the discussions have not been made public, the very convening of the meeting at this level in this sector is significant.

Corps Commander-level talks have traditionally been used to resolve military standoffs along the LAC. Until now, such meetings have been held primarily in eastern Ladakh, where a prolonged confrontation between the two armies began in 2020. The decision to hold the first such meeting in Arunachal Pradesh signals a broadening of the dialogue process to address friction points in other sectors as well.

The timing of the meeting, just before the BRICS Summit, adds a diplomatic dimension to the military engagement.
