
India's Javelin missile deal: A new era for infantry anti-armour warfare
India has signed a deal for the U.S. Javelin anti-tank missile, adding a fire-and-forget, top-attack capability to its infantry.
India's acquisition of the U.S.-made Javelin anti-tank guided missile system marks a significant upgrade for the Indian Army's infantry, bringing a battle-proven, fire-and-forget weapon to the frontline. The purchase, formalised through a Letter of Offer and Acceptance under the U.S. Foreign Military Sales programme, also opens the door for potential co-production within India.
A key attraction of the Javelin is its fire-and-forget nature. Unlike older wire-guided systems, an operator can launch the missile and immediately relocate, a crucial advantage in modern combat where launch positions are quickly targeted. The system's top-attack profile allows it to strike a tank's thinner upper armour, making it highly effective against heavily protected vehicles.
The deal concludes nearly 15 years of negotiations that were previously stalled over technology transfer and local manufacturing concerns. While India pursued indigenous alternatives like the DRDO-developed MPATGM and acquired limited quantities of Israeli Spike missiles for urgent needs, the Javelin provides a mature, immediately available capability.
This acquisition fills a specific operational gap. While India has other anti-tank systems like the Nag missile family for vehicle-mounted and helicopter roles, the Army requires a highly portable, infantry-operated weapon for small teams operating independently. The Javelin is expected to meet this requirement, complementing ongoing indigenous programmes as they mature.
The industrial dimension is equally significant. Tata Advanced Systems Limited and the Javelin Joint Venture—comprising RTX and Lockheed Martin—have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore final assembly and integration of the Javelin All Up Round in India. Under this model, sub-assemblies and guidance electronics would be produced in the U.S. and shipped to India for final integration, potentially bringing advanced manufacturing expertise and creating specialised jobs.
The move aligns with lessons from recent conflicts, which have highlighted the vulnerability of armoured formations operating without adequate support. It also supports the Army's restructuring towards faster, more flexible units like the Bhairav rapid-action teams, which could benefit from lightweight, precision-guided weapons that don't rely on heavier platforms.
