India in constant touch with Kyiv, Moscow to push for end to war: Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said on Friday that India has maintained continuous communication with both Ukraine and Russia, exploring ideas that could help de-escalate or end the ongoing conflict. Speaking in Warsaw after a visit to Kyiv, he stressed that New Delhi is actively looking for suggestions that could contribute to a resolution.

Jaishankar, who met his Polish counterpart Radoslaw Sikorski, said their talks covered major global challenges, including supply chain resilience and the security of food, fuel, and fertiliser supplies. He noted that the war in Ukraine, now in its fifth year, was a central topic of discussion, coming as it did immediately after his own visit to the Ukrainian capital.

Reiterating India's position, Jaishankar said such wars have no winners and that every additional day brings more destruction and greater costs to the world. He urged a shift towards dialogue and diplomacy, stating that India is acting on this conviction.

Addressing questions on India's purchase of Russian oil, the minister said the conflict will not end because of trade choices but only through negotiations. He added that the focus should be on diagnosing the problem correctly.

During his visit, Jaishankar also reviewed the implementation of the India-Poland Joint Action Plan 2024-28, which covers trade, defence, culture, and multilateral cooperation. He later called on Polish President Karol Nawrocki, with whom he discussed the bilateral strategic partnership and exchanged views on the Ukraine conflict and the situation in West Asia.
