750-kg Indian Gaur Rescued from Hunter's Snare in Papikonda National Park
A 750-kg female Indian Gaur caught in a hunter's wire snare in Papikonda National Park was rescued by forest officials and is recovering at a Visakhapatnam rescue centre.
Forest officials in Andhra Pradesh have rescued a 750-kilogram female Indian Gaur (Bos gaurus) that was trapped in a wire snare set by hunters in the Eco-Sensitive Zone of Papikonda National Park (PNP) in Polavaram district.
The animal was spotted during a patrol in the Indukuru reserve forest of the Rampachodavaram Forest Division on September 10, after which a rescue operation was launched.
The operation was led by Rampachodavaram Divisional Forest Officer Shivakumar Gangal, with a team of forest officials and veterinarians taking part.
According to Mr. Gangal, the gaur was given initial treatment for its injuries before being shifted to the Animal Rescue Centre (ARC) in Visakhapatnam for advanced veterinary care, rehabilitation and a faster recovery.
On Saturday, the official said the animal was responding to treatment and showing signs of recovery at the Visakhapatnam ARC.
The Papikonda Hill Range in the Godavari Valley was historically known as the 'Bison Hills', a landscape where Indian Gaur are known to thrive.
