Railways Clears ₹497 Crore Doubling of Chouk-Karjat Section in Maharashtra
Indian Railways has approved doubling of the 10.86 km Chouk-Karjat section on Central Railway at a cost of ₹497 crore to boost passenger and freight capacity.
Indian Railways has approved the doubling of the Chouk-Karjat railway section on Central Railway, a 10.86 km stretch in Maharashtra, at an estimated cost of ₹497 crore. The sanction falls under the umbrella works covering doubling, tripling, quadrupling, flyover and bypass projects intended to expand the capacity of the rail network.
The section lies on the Panvel-Chouk-Karjat route, a corridor that carries both passenger and freight traffic. Doubling the existing single-line stretch is expected to create additional capacity and streamline the movement of trains along the route.
According to the approval, the completed project is expected to allow five additional passenger trains in each direction every day. It is also projected to support an additional 18.35 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) of freight traffic, while helping reduce the detention of freight trains.
The decision is part of Indian Railways' broader effort to strengthen rail infrastructure, raise capacity and improve the flow of both passengers and goods.
