Indian Railways to four-lane 11,000 km high-density network

Indian Railways plans to four-lane 11,000 km of high-density routes to expand capacity and reduce congestion on key corridors.

Indian Railways has announced plans to four-lane approximately 11,000 km of its high-density rail network, a move aimed at expanding train capacity and easing congestion on some of the country's busiest corridors. The infrastructure push is designed to improve the movement of both passenger and freight trains across key routes.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the significance of seven high-density routes that together carry a substantial share of national rail traffic. These routes, spanning nearly 11,000 km, account for around 41 per cent of total railway traffic despite constituting only about 16 per cent of the overall network. The minister also underscored the environmental and economic advantages of rail transport.

The seven identified high-density routes are Delhi-Howrah, Howrah-Chennai, Chennai-Mumbai, Mumbai-Delhi, Delhi-Chennai, Mumbai-Howrah, and Delhi-Guwahati.

The national transporter stated that the expansion is crucial for routes handling heavy traffic between major cities and regions. Additional railway lines would allow trains to operate with greater flexibility and reduce pressure on existing tracks. The four-laning initiative is part of Indian Railways' broader strategy to increase capacity and prepare the network for future passenger and freight demand.

In a separate development, the minister informed the Lok Sabha on July 22, 2026, that Kavach 4.0, India's indigenously developed automatic train protection system, has been expanded to cover 2,490 route km across the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah corridors. Kavach 4.0 includes upgrades such as improved train location accuracy, better signal information in large railway yards, and a station-to-station interface through optical fibre cable. The system can also be directly integrated with the existing Electronic Interlocking System.
