Indian Equities Poised for Modest Uptick Amid Geopolitical Jitters
Indian shares are set to open slightly higher after four weekly declines, with investors weighing Middle East tensions against positive global cues.
Indian equity benchmarks are likely to open marginally higher on Monday, snapping a four-week losing streak, as indicated by GIFT Nifty futures trading at 23,977.5 points. This suggests a positive start for the Nifty 50, which closed at 23,897.7 on Friday.
The optimism is tempered by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The United States reported striking three Iranian tankers on Saturday following an Iranian ballistic missile attack on two U.S. Navy ships. In response, a senior Iranian official has warned of a "painful response" to any further attacks, keeping risk sentiment fragile.
These concerns are reflected in global oil markets, with Brent crude futures rising 0.4% to near $97 per barrel. However, broader Asian markets advanced, buoyed by a robust U.S. jobs report that reinforced confidence in global growth, even as it leaves the door open for a Federal Reserve rate hike this month.
Market participants are also monitoring changes to pre-open session rules, which are being aligned with the newly introduced closing auction session (CAS) that has caused sharp swings at the market close. Analysts suggest investors are likely to remain cautious about building aggressive positions until the geopolitical outlook becomes clearer.
The benchmark Nifty 50 and Sensex have declined 2.7% and 2.5%, respectively, over the past four weeks, pressured by higher oil prices and rising global bond yields. Foreign investors have been net sellers, offloading shares worth 31.12 billion rupees on Friday and a total of $782 million so far in September.
In corporate news, Tata Consultancy Services announced that its subsidiary and partners will invest up to 700 billion rupees to build a 1-gigawatt AI data center campus in Telangana. Separately, Cohance Lifesciences stated that a U.S. FDA inspection at its Telangana plant concluded with a Form FDA 483 containing four observations.
